I wanted to do this in a smaller, discussion-style post.
I had a question for the community - is this 1970s/1980s influence in some of the most popular models on the market a shift towards a quirky design within the larger community, or just remnants of the Genta era?
Look to the Tissot PRX as an example - this is a wildly popular model with such a distinct, daring design from the brand. While it looks most like an Oyster Quartz, this Rolex model has silently gone up in price seemingly overnight.
In terms of vintage, just look to the Cartier Santos Carree - one of the most poppin’ models within its price bracket. This wasn’t always the case for them - they’ve gone crazy in a span of a year or two.
Not convinced? Consider Vacheron’s latest tidal wave at W&W. The 222 re-edition of 2022 (lots of 2s) is the newest member of their heritage collection. This piece is so unapologetically 1970s that it really begs the question, especially considering the brand already offers the Overseas as a competitor to the RO or Nautilus.
Side note, I love this thing
As a little P.S. to this discussion post, you should check out this recent ad from AP - make no mistake how 1980s it is.
Perhaps this trend is what the market wants, or what stuffy Swiss companies think the market wants. Maybe they’re appealing to a younger generation by pushing this neo-vintage fresh look. Or maybe it’s just a cash grab from the proven popularity of Genta design.
Let me know in the comments - I’d love to discuss!
